Kareta couldn’t complain about anything in her new life, except how utterly bored she was. Now she had never really been the type of girl that was content to sit at home all day and eat grass and never do anything exciting so after spending the last four months doing nothing but that she was about to go insane from having nothing to do. Now, she wont go as far as to say that the last four months had been completely wasted ‘for she had given birth to a lovely little boy and spent time trying to turn him into something his father would be proud of. She knew that soon enough, probably another four months or so, and Torin would no longer think he needed her and he would leave and start spending more time with his father. Kareta wouldn’t say she would miss the little terror but she did know that if she wanted to leave an imprint on him it would have to be when he still looked up to her. Unfortunately for her he had inherited her spirit and he never wanted to stay still for longer then an hour and then he was off like a rocket with her trailing behind to make sure he didn’t do something utterly stupid. Right now she was standing over him while he napped, getting a brief reprieve from the hyper young boy’s adventures and she started trying to think of things she could do with all the spare time she would be having soon. She’d heard rumors of there being an all-gail’s herd starting, maybe she could pay them a visit and get to know some women that thought the way she did. If it hadn’t been for her father promising her to Naz she would probably have run off to join the free-mare herd and have all sorts of interesting things to do, instead she was trapped here taking care of a kid she’d only really had to make Naz happy and give herself something to do. Didn't she just sound like mother-of-the-year! Actually, if she wanted to she could go there and just bring Torin with her since he was old enough to make a journey with her to one of the free places. Kareta wasn’t stupid enough to run off to one of those places where men would rub up on her or try and bully her home with them, Naz certainly wouldn’t take kindly to having to save her butt if that happened.
Kareta wasn’t sure what she thought of Naz yet, he’d seemed nice enough when she got here, if a bit impatient with her youthful flirting. She’d pretty much just come over and introduced herself, he’d welcomed her, she’d flirted and he’d given her the little boy lying at her feet right now. After that initial visit she’d only seen Naz one other time, and that was when Torin was born and the father had come to see him. Kareta had been exhausted and probably looked horrid from the hours of labor but Naz had been sweet and seemed proud to have been given a son. Since then she’d kept mostly to herself, taking care of Torin and daydreaming about what she was going to do once Torin was old enough to actually go somewhere. Now that the time was on her though she was unsure if she should go, she wanted to have a good standing in this herd. She wasn’t dumb enough to think she’d ever become queen even if she had the ambition for it, no Kareta was barely over three years old there was not a chance in hell that she would be considered mature enough to lead other mares. Maybe someday in the future, if things didn’t work out with Naz and she was older she would try for Queen, right now she was aiming a little lower and had her sights set on being one of his Favored mares. She could live with that, but it would take time and she would have to start spending more of it with Naz. What a bother herd life turned out to be, she’d always thought it would be fun but it just seemed to be politics and trying to outsmart the bitchy girls that wanted the same thing she did.
Torin stirred in his sleep, waking up when a bird wouldn’t shut the hell up. He looked over and saw that Mom was still there and instead of struggling up and latching onto her he stood and curiously sampled the green shoots that Mom and the other adults ate. They weren’t bad, but no-where near as good as mom’s milk. He was at that strange age where he was starting to wean away from his mother, wanting more independence yet at the same time unsure of himself and not wanting to leave the certainty that being with mom gave him. It was very confusing for the colt. Once he’d satisfied his hunger with the grass he squealed at his mother, rearing up and biting her rather roughly on the back before tearing off wanting her to play with him. Kareta hadn’t really been paying attention to Torin beside looking at him proudly when he chose grass over milk, so when he bit her and took off she tossed her head auds pinned angrily. That was really getting old. Unfortunately for her it was something every colt did, they were always beating up on their mothers if they didn’t have other boys to play with, but that didn’t mean Kareta liked being the little brat’s punching bag! She considered just letting him run off and give him a fright when he realized she wasn’t with him, it would serve the little brat right to have a scare for running off like that. She dismissed the idea soon after though ‘for although she did have a bitchy side she tended to have a soft spot for her little monster. Instead she set off after him at an easy trot, he’d get tired eventually and she could still see in running in the distance so it wasn’t like she had to be right beside him.
She’d just picked up to a canter to catch up with him when he suddenly disappeared from view, as if the earth had just sucked him in and she heard his frightened cry a second later. “Torin!” she broke into her fastest gait, calling for him to see if he was alright but he didn’t respond and she feared the worst. She was running so fast that she almost didn’t see the steep hill until she was right on it and she had to put the brakes on to save herself from following right after him and falling in the gully with him. Torin looked up at his mother when she appeared at the edge of what he thought of as a cliff since it seemed so huge to him, he cried out for her to help him, trying vainly to scale the steep side of the hill he’d fallen down but only managing to get a few feet up before his feet slipped and he tumbled back down again. He hadn’t known this gully was here, he and ma spent most of their time by the creek not this deep in the woods! Kareta started pacing the edge, unsure what to do since it was too steep for her to get down without falling, and even if she did get down there how would she get them back up? She watched him tumble back again, landing on his back this time with a small cry of pain and she felt tears of frustration welling in her eyes. “Torin you stay put, don’t try and climb up here you’ll hurt yourself!” For once in the colts young life he listened to his mother and stood still at the bottom, sure that she would figure out some way to help him. Kareta waited only a moment to make sure Torin was listening then called out loudly for Nazareth to come and help them. Her call was urgent from worry and she knew that he would pick up on the desperation in her voice and come quickly. “Don’t worry Torin, your daddy will get you out of there.” The poor thing just nodded and Kareta felt bad for not catching up with him before, if she’d been next to him she would have been able to stop him before he fell in there and this whole mess could have been avoided. How was she to know something like this would happen though? She was a first time mother and it wasn’t like Torin didn’t frequently run off without hurting himself, she still blamed herself though and the pair waited anxiously for the Champagne stallion to appear and fix things.
